Churches united
for the homeless
Our Mission is to provide shelter and support
in a spiritual setting.
We accomplish this goal by offering spiritual ministry and emotional affirmation to homeless people, furnishing a temporary shelter for homeless people, and referring residents to appropriate services such as Job Service, Social Services, Mental Health Services, and programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
Background & Service
Churches United for the Homeless was founded by a handful of our communities' churches in the fall of 1987 and for the first 17 years we were housed in the old Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead. In 2004 we moved into our present location at 1901 First Avenue North in Moorhead. Today Churches United for the Homeless is supported by a core of 58 member churches.
In 2009 we provided-
•21,581 nights of lodging.
•94,897 meals.
•100,993 pounds of food, distributed through our food pantry which is open Tuesday from 1:00-4:00 and Wednesday from 4:00-5:00.
•Access on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to our free thrift store. This store offers residents and the general public access to needed clothes, coats, shoes, furniture, and various household items.
•Rental assistance and intensive case management to four families and eight individuals through our transitional housing program.
•25 hours per week of on-site Shelter Faith Community Nurse Services.
•Available office space for outside outreach agencies including Lakeland Mental Health, Homeless Health, Lakes and Prairies, HRA, CCRI, Veterans Administration, Alcoholics Anonymous, and many others.
Churches United for the Homeless is one of the largest shelters in northwestern Minnesota and is the only shelter within 250 miles that is able to accommodate single men, single women, and both one and two parent families. We offer a safe haven to those most in need, a chance to reflect on the direction they wish for their lives, and the opportunity to utilize our community's many resources in achieving their goals.
Our new, larger location has brought us not only the ability to help more people but also brought about a greater need for volunteers, donations, and operating income. While churches, businesses, and individuals throughout our community continue to support our mission we still find ourselves struggling to meet the growing demand of those we strive to serve.
If you have the desire and/or ability to help Churches United for the Homeless and those we minister please contact me directly at 218-236-0372 or durkdt@702com.net.
Sincerely,
Durk D. Thompson
