Churches United for the Homeless - Providing Shelter and Support in a Spiritual Setting

History

Churches United for the Homeless was founded by a handful of our community churches in the fall of 1987, and for the first 17 years, we were housed in the old Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead. In 2004, we moved into our present location - the old Plunkett's furniture store at 1901 1st Avenue North, in Moorhead. Today, Churches United for the Homeless is supported by a core of 55 member churches.

Our new, larger location, has brought us not only the ability to help more people - but also a greater need for volunteers, donations, and operating income. While churches, businesses, and individuals throughout our community continue to support our mission, we still find ourselves struggling to meet the growing demand of those we strive diligently to serve.

In 2010, we provided:

22,724 nights of lodging.

86,235 meals.

159,336 pounds of food, distributed through our food pantry.

Access on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for residents and the general public to our free thrift store.

Rental assistance and intensive care management to four families and eight individuals through our transitional housing program.

25 hours per week of on-site Shelter Faith Community Nurse services.

Available office space for outside outreach agencies, including: Lakeland Mental Health; Homeless Health; Lakes and Prairies; HRA; CCRI; the Veterans Administration; Alcoholics Anonymous; and many others.
