Volunteering at Churches United is a resolution you will want to keep!

There are so many awesome volunteer opportunities in January, including special Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend opportunities

New year, new volunteer opportunities!

We experienced an immense amount of generosity over the holiday season – from donations to volunteering and everything in between, but our work is not done. The need is still great, and volunteers help us meet that need.

In January, we are seeking volunteers to help with lunch prep, sort donations and help with our pop-up shops, to name a few opportunities!

Each of these opportunities is incredibly important in serving our neighbors in need. We serve about 350 meals each day out of our kitchen in Micah’s Mission, so support from volunteers is critical in ensuring our neighbors have enough to eat.

The pop-up shop and donation sorting are just as important as we move into the coldest months of the year. Churches United is very fortunate to have received an influx of clothing donations over the holidays. By helping to sort those items in our donation room, you ensure that they get into the hands of community members as quickly as possible.

Helping with the pop-up shop is just as important. On Wednesdays, clothing is set out in the community center for shelter guests and community members to shop free-of-charge for what they need. The clothing available is tailored to the coming week’s weather, ensuring that our neighbors have adequate clothing when they need it most. As a volunteer, you can help guide shoppers and provide assistance during the event. It’s a very fun time!

We also have special volunteer opportunities over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.  Over four days, volunteers are invited to give their time, energy and heart by choosing from a variety of meaningful service activities each hour. Whether you enjoy crafting, organizing, encouraging others or helping keep our shelter welcoming, your presence truly makes a difference. Come be part of something hopeful, heartfelt and community-building, all while honoring Dr. King’s legacy of compassion, justice and care.

Here are the volunteer opportunities you can choose from that weekend:

  • Notes of Hope: Create uplifting messages and MLK-inspired quote cards for our guests and staff. Your words of kindness help brighten spirits and remind our community they’re not alone.

  • Donations Sorting: Help us organize clothing, hygiene items, and essential supplies so they’re ready for guests who need them most. This hands-on task keeps our shelter running smoothly and with dignity.

  • Sparkle & Shine: Add warmth to our space by helping with light cleaning and simple beautification projects. Your efforts create a more welcoming, comfortable environment for our guests.

  • Kindness Kits: Assemble cozy care packs — such as comfort kits or winter warmth bundles — that support guests during the coldest months. A small kit can make a big impact on someone’s day.

  • MLK Mural Makers: Help host a welcoming coloring table where guests and community members can color individual pieces that will come together to form a collective portrait of Dr. King. As a volunteer, you’ll encourage participation, offer support and help create a shared artwork that celebrates hope, justice and community.

No matter what opportunity calls to you, we hope to see you this January. Thank you for your generosity, kindness and compassion.
