Our community’s kindness knows no bounds

Nov. 13 is World Kindness Day. At Churches United, we see kindness every day from people, businesses and organizations.

Nov. 13 is World Kindness Day, and in that spirit, Churches United wants to highlight the kindness it experiences every day. Whether it’s volunteers giving their time, a local business hosting a food drive or a donation, Churches United knows this community’s kindness knows no bounds.

In the last month, when Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits were in limbo due to the federal government shutdown, Churches United experienced an outpouring of support and kindness. Businesses, organizations and individuals stepped up to help their neighbors who weren’t sure how they would put food on the table.

In October alone, between Micah’s Mission and Dorothy Day Food Pantry, 61 new volunteers registered to lend a hand for a total of 99 volunteer shifts. Those volunteers recorded 231.5 hours of volunteer work at facilities, just shy of 10 full days’ worth of help.

Factoring in recurring volunteers at both facilities, that jumps to about 210 total volunteer shifts filled and a whopping 611.5 hours of volunteering.

Volunteers are central to Churches United, generously giving their time, effort and energy to our mission. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to provide safe shelter, stable housing, nutritious food and a path toward healing!

At Dorothy Day Food Pantry last month, there were 1,539 visits, and 55,428 pounds of food were distributed to community members facing food insecurity. Collecting that much food and distributing it is not possible without donations and pantry volunteers who assist on distribution days.

Thank you to everyone who has helped feed, clothe, house and support their neighbors during a moment of immense need. And while SNAP benefits were sent in full last week, our community continues to recognize the growing need and continues to step up to help.

No matter how you support Churches United, every act of kindness helps meet that rising need, and we are truly grateful for your support!
