Important information for those needing help during dangerous cold
With wind chill as cold as 50 below zero this weekend, if you need help, here are some services you can utilize at Micah’s Mission this weekend
Fargo-Moorhead and the region are under an extreme cold weather watch beginning Thursday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. A cold weather advisory is in effect from Wednesday until Thursday afternoon.
Windchills are expected to be as cold as 52 below zero from Thursday afternoon until Sunday morning. According to the National Weather Service, frostbite can occur in as little as five minutes at those temperatures. The Weather Service advises anyone who will be outdoors to layer as much as possible, including wearing a hat, face mask and gloves.
Churches United is prepared to help those needing assistance during the dangerously cold weather. The Micah’s Mission Community Center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. Anyone is welcome and can stay as long as they like, until the community center closes at 8 p.m. Three free meals will be served while the community center is open: brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m.; and dinner from 5-6:30 p.m. Meal times are approximate, and may vary slightly depending on prep work and other factors.
Anyone in need of warm clothing can request some at the shelter’s front desk while the shelter is open. Blankets are also available.
Once the community center closes, community members will be directed to the Fargo winter warming area at the Downtown Engagement Center, 222 Fourth St. N, Fargo, which is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The winter warming center is for individuals who are 18 or older. Churches United does not offer any transportation between Micah’s Mission and the Downtown Engagement Center. For more information on the warming center, please visit The City of Fargo - 2025-2026 City of Fargo Winter Warming Center.
Please note that the Micah’s Mission Shelter is full, and you must call 218-656-7495 to be placed on the bed list. The earliest time you can call to be placed on the list is 8 a.m., when the shelter opens. Do not email Churches United to request a bed; you will not be placed on the list if you request a bed via email.
